Introduction
Intercollegiate Web Development International Contest (I.C.W.D.I.C.) 2005 is the first global Internet contest managed by XITEX Software to encourage college and university students to challenge the first professional experience barrier and make their first step to their career. That should be done through the team work at their college/university’s new website.
I.C.W.D.I.C. is an international contest with 4 year frequency open to any college/university students’ team. The purpose of contest is to promote the Internet Style of activities among institutes of higher education and help students interested in web development make their first step to the real life through a complex and real web project development. The contest is aimed to give students faith in their abilities as well as establish strong collaborative spirit between different colleges. The physical goals of I.C.W.D.I.C. are as follows:
- Provide institutes of higher education with reliable and professional websites so that they could promote themselves via the Internet more effectively.
- Help at least 20 students to find their first place of employment.
- Help students to build their own business.
- Develop intercollegiate science collaboration and exchange on the global level.
- Develop strong partnership relationships between colleges/universities and key players on the software and web development market.
1. Contest Schedule and Deadlines
- Online Applications - Applications for the I.C.W.D.I.C. 2005 may be submitted via the I.C.W.D.I.C. website no later than March 25, 2005 12:00 p.m. GMT.
- Groups Forming - Groups of teams build on a regional basis will be formed and published no later than March 29, 2005 12:00 p.m. GMT
- Deliverables - Deliverables for the I.C.W.D.I.C. 2005 must be completed, and submitted no later than May 27, 2005 12:00 p.m. GMT .
- Judging - Judging process of the entries begins immediately after the entry deadline divided into 2 parts:
- The results of the first tour (regional) will be published on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website no later than June 7, 2005 12:00 p.m. GMT.
- The results of the final tour (global) will be published on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website no later than June 13, 2005 12:00 p.m. GMT.
2. Team Makeup and Eligibility
In order to participate in I.C.W.D.I.C. there should be formed a core team of developers before the beginning of the contest.
The team should consist of the unlimited number of members and a manager.
Members and manager should belong to the college/university they represent.
The team manager is the contact point and medium between I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers and a team. The help and any other info should be performed via the team manager only or additional contact point assigned by manager only.
At least one team member and manager should have valid email and MSN or ICQ contact.
3. Proposal Process
After submitting the application form via the I.C.W.D.I.C. website you will receive notification whether the colledge/university is accepted for the contest or not in 48 hours. If you it is accepted we require to send an email to us with the following info we need to announce the participant on our website and include it to the database:
- College/University Name
- Colledge/University Logo in JPG or GIF format (no greater than 150x150 pixels)
- Current Website
- Short College/University Description (up to 450 chars)
- URL of the contest website deliverable
- Number of team members
- Manager’s Full Name
- Manager’s email address and MSN/ICQ
- Second contact point’s Full Name
- Second Contact Point’s email address and MSN/ICQ
This info should be submitted from the email address mentioned in the application form.
Since this info is received and published on I.C.W.D.I.C. website the college/university is deemed as the contast participant
4. Contest website requirements
Each contest website should meet requirements as follows:
- Should be developed on Xitex WebContent M1 content management system and have the link at the bottom of each page: "Powered by Xitex WebContent M1"
- Should be the website of the college/university the team represents or of one of its departments
- Should be at least in 2 languages: English + any language the team finds appropriate for their college’s website
5. Submitting the Deliverable
A completed result deliverable consists of two items:
- The completed website of the college/university or of one of its depaptments available in the Internet and made on Xitex WebContent M1 content management system;
- A completed final questionnaire (filled out in English).
When the team has completed those two items, its deliverable will be reviewed.
Deliverables may be submitted any time until the deadline.
6. Judging Criteria
The five judging criteria, weighted as indicated below, will be used for all category awards.
A. 20 points – Website Usability
Judges will determine if the website has a strong command of usability, i.e.
- clear website structure
- proper navigation system
- possibility to find the information needed in an easy way
- proper interaction of design and web standards
B. 20 points – Website Design Quality and Adequacy
In order to encourage teams to develop websites with a pleasant appearance, Judges will evaluate:
- Graphical appearance of the website
- Creativity and usage of different sources (images, media etc.)
- Optimization for different browser viewing
- Optimization for the quick site load
C. 20 points – Content Quality and Adequacy
This part of judgment will include such criteria as:
- Content adequacy to the website main goals
- Content optimization for the search engine systems
D. 20 points – Usage of Xitex WebContent M1 Modules
In order to evaluate the website automaticity judges will take into account quality, quantity and adequacy of usage Xitex WebContent M1 tools and modules in the web development process.
E. 20 points – Overall Appearance
This last part of the judgment is to integrate all previous parts and to evaluate whether design, content, structure, navigation and interactivity are interacting together the best and bring synergetic effect to the contest website’s overall appearance.
7. Information on Awards and Award Terms
Based on the relative merits of the entries, the judges will select the top scoring entries within each regional groups (first time judging) and globally (final judging between the first place winners in each regional group) to receive awards, with the exception of any team that has been disqualified and whose members will not receive any award. All award announcements will be posted on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website.
Winning teams will receive awards and their sites will be published on the Xitex WebContent M1 website (http://webcontent-m1.com).
8. Judging of Deliverables
A panel of international independent judges will be selected by XITEX Software. The Judges will review each entry. Entries may be judged in a category other than the one in which they were submitted. All decisions will be based on the Judging Criteria and will, in all respects, be final and binding. All award lists will be posted on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website. I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers reserve the right to have judging performed by other persons.
9. Disqualification
Disqualification of Applications, Entries, Participants or Teams
I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers or the Judges may decide to disqualify an application or disqualify an entry if it or they are of the opinion that:
- There has been no timely and proper submission of the application, the entry (including all items required by the instructions for the entry on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website), or all of the deliverables,
- There is a violation of any portion of the rules, or the required forms,
- A team has intentionally or negligently gained unauthorized access to, or misused, the XITEX Software websites or servers by gaining access to areas that the team does not have explicit right to use or by using the servers for purposes not related to the development and deployment of an entry. For example, a team will be immediately disqualified if it intentionally gains access to an area of the servers other than its entry area or uses the server e-mail facility for purposes not related to the entry.
Employees or close relatives of employees of XITEX Software are not eligible to participate as team members in any I.C.W.D.I.C. contest.
Disqualification of Judges
In order to avoid an actual or apparent conflict of interest, a Judge must not be closely related to team members or coaches of a team that the Judge is screening, evaluating, or judging. Accordingly, no one may act as a Judge with respect to an application or an entry of a team if he or she is related to any member or coach of that team, or otherwise feels that he or she might be, or appear to be, biased. To enable such self-disqualification, a list of the teams and their members will be available to the Judges. All decisions by I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers and/or the Judges will be final.
10. Competition disavowal
Any contest team has its right of competition disavowal. Should the team decide to leave the contest the team manager should inform I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers. Should any team leave the contest, its info will be removed from the I.C.W.D.I.C. website.
11. Changes
Extensions of Contest Deadlines
I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers may extend any contest deadline, and will post any such extension on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website.
12. Ownership of Intellectual Property and the Rights & Duties of Parties
An deliverable will remain the property of the submitting team (college/university).
13. Finality of I.C.W.D.I.C. Organizers’ Decisions
Each decision of I.C.W.D.I.C. organizers and each decision of any of the Judges, with respect to any matter related to any I.C.W.D.I.C. contest, shall, in all respects, be final and binding on the team member(s) and shall not be subject to review.
14. Modification of the Rules
XITEX Software reserves the right to modify the rules to the extent that it believes it is appropriate to enable the contest to be carried out most effectively in one country or more than one country and/or to comply with the laws and regulations of such country or countries. However, in no event will any change be made in the Rules to comply with the laws or regulations of a particular country if such change would, in the opinion of XITEX Software, diminish the fairness of the contest itself or interfere with the achievement of the objectives of the contest. Modifications will be posted on the I.C.W.D.I.C. website and emailed to all the team managers. The rules published on I.C.W.D.I.C. website are the final version of the rules and should be consulted periodically by all I.C.W.D.I.C. participants.
